Kickstand
Queenie Records is proud to release our first long-player (and compact disc) by our favorite underground pop trio, Kickstand. Kickstand was born three years ago when they made their splashy debut at the infamous Lots of Pop Losers Festival in Washington, D.C. Starting out originally as a side project of Flying Saucer (Torry was the drummer of this underappreciated band, which Jeff produced), Kickstand recorded two cassette-only EPs, On Training Wheels and Wheelie, with the help of their friends in Kicking Giant and Flying Saucer. Both cassettes were popular with pop fans across the country and they quickly sold out.
The long-awaited, self-titled Kickstand debut features 14 new songs as well as nine bonus tracks from On Training Wheels and Wheelie. "A direct progeny of Maureen Tucker, Jad Fair, Jonathan Richman and A.A. Milne," Kickstand's songs range from darling naptime musings to wistful tunes about girl crushes and riding in flying saucers. Happy organ beeps, finger-plinked guitars and swinging drum noises complement Tammi and Torry's delicious tenor vocals and Jeff's very baritone voice. Kickstand's remake of the Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" is a delightful romp, and their sassy cover of the Young Marble Giants' "Colossal Youth" definitely does justice to the band that inspired them.
Featured guest artists include Jad Fair, John Sluggett of Half Japanese and Moe Tucker's band, Caroline Azar of Fifth Column, Jeff Kryvicky of Flying Saucer, and Kicking Giant's Tae Won Yu and Rachel Carns.
